Peptitler (Grekçe: πεπτίδια; “önemsiz sindirilebilirler”) teşhismlanmış bir düzende, α-amino asitlerin birbirine ilişkilanmasıyla oluşan endamsız polimerlerdir.[1] Bir amino asit sözıntısı ile ötekisi arasındaki bağ bir “amit bağ” yahut peptit bağı olarak bilinir.[1]
Tetrapeptit (Oligopeptit)
Proteinler polipeptit molekülleridir (yahut çok sayıda polipeptit ast birimi barındırır). Yapı taşı ayırt peptitlerin endamsız, polipeptitlerin/proteinlerin ise uzun olmasıdır.[1]
Protein sentezi sırasında her amino asit, sair amino asite daima, kırılmayan bir polimer olan polipeptid zincirleriyle ilişkilanır. Polipeptid strüktürsına acımasızlan amino asitlerin her biri strüktürya peptid ilişkilarıyla ilişkilanır. Peptid bağının oluşumu sırasında amino asitlerden birinin amino grubu ile diğerinin karboksil grubu, aradan bir deniz çıkması sonucu birleşirler.[1]
Vasati bir polipeptit zinciri 450 amino asitten oluşur.[1] Bilindik en uzun polipeptit, yaklaşık 27,000 amino asitten oluşan, kas dokusunda bulunan “titin”dir. Polipeptid zincirine acımasızlan amino asitlere sözıntı (residue) adı verilir.[1] Zincirin bir ucundaki sözıntı, bağ yapmamış, özgür amino grubu barındırır ve N ucu olarak adlandırılır. Aynı şekilde zincirin sair ucundaki özgür α-karboksil grubu olan sözıntıevet C ucu adı verilir.
